Nubia Z17 Launched with Snapdragon 835 SoC, 8GB of RAM, and Quick Charge 4+

ZTE's sub-brand Nubia has announced a new flagship in its home country, China, called the Nubia Z17. With the Nubia Z17, the Chinese OEM aims to deliver flagship smartphone experience with top-of-the-line hardware and premium design without raising the price bar too high. While not as popular as other Chinese OEMs such as Huawei and Xiaomi, Nubia has lately been expanding its smartphone offerings into European and US markets.

The Nubia Z17 is the successor to the last year's Nubia Z11. Broadly speaking, the Nubia Z17 follows the same design language of the Nubia Z11, featuring a glass and metal body with a nearly bezel-less display. The device sports the same 5.5-inch full HD IPS display and comes with the familiar capacitive home button on the front.

However, the things get more exciting when we look at the internals of the device. On the inside of the Nubia Z17 is the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC along with Adreno 540 GPU. The device packs whopping 8GB of RAM and a hefty 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. As for the camera, the device comes with a dual-camera setup on the back comprising of a 12MP sensor and a 23MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and larger 1.4 µm pixel size. The camera offers 2x lossless zoom, 10x dynamic zoom, 0.03 ultra fast focus speed and make use of artificial intelligence and NeoVision 7.0 search engine to further improve camera performance.

The front-facing camera has also been upgraded from an 8MP sensor to a 16MP one and features f/2.0 aperture and 80-degree wide-angle lens for improved selfie experience.

There is a 3,200 mAh battery on-board which the company claims can last up to 2.4 days on a single charge, thanks to its NeoPower 3.0 power saving system. Also, the Nubia Z17 is the first device to ship with Qualcomm's latest fast charging standard, Quick Charge 4+, out of the box and can charge the battery from 0 to 50℅ in just 25 minutes.

On the software side of things, the Nubia Z17 comes running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with Nubia UI 5.0 on top. Similar to what we have seen on some of the Huawei devices, Nubia UI comes with some sort of AI-based technology called NeoSmart that improves performance and user experience over the time by learning user's pattern and behavior through its machine learning algorithms.

The Nubia Z17 is also IP67 certified and can survive submersion into water up to 1 mt. for up to 30 minutes. However, making the device water-resistant means the device now no longer features a headphone jack nor it offers MicroSD card expansion.

Finally, the device comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, IR blaster, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, and USB Type-C port.

The Nubia Z17 will be available in five different colors – aurora blue, black gold, obsidian black, solar gold, flame red, and three storage options to choose from. As for pricing, the 8GB RAM + 128GB variant will retail for 3999 yuan ($590), the 6GB RAM + 128GB model for 3399 yuan ($500), while the model with 6GB RAM + 64GB will set you back 2799 yuan ($410). All variants of the Nubia Z17 will go on sale in China come June 6. It's not clear at this point exactly when, if ever, the device will be made available in other regions.

Qualcomm Introduces Quick Charge 4+, Nubia Z17 to Bring it First

Today, smartphones are way more than just phones. They are practically a complete pocket multi-purpose computer with software capable of performing even the most difficult tasks with varying effectiveness. Unfortunately, even the most capacious battery can drain quite fast and needs frequent, if not daily, recharging. Qualcomm has a way to alleviate that — it's called Quick Charge 4+.

Quick Charge 4+ is the successor to last year's Quick Charge 4. You may find this move surprising because you certainly haven't seen devices supporting such standard.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ has three major improvements compared to its predecessor. The first one is Dual charge, which divides the charge current across two management Integrated Circuits. According to Qualcomm this move should reduce the charge time by 15 percent and lower temperatures by 3°C. Qualcomm says that that thanks to QC4+, a device can go from empty to 50 percent in just 15 minutes.

The second new feature is called Intelligent Thermal Balancing. Currently, some phones get hot at certain points during charging. This new feature moves the electricity through the coolest path and eliminates these hot spots. QC4+ is also monitoring the device case and connector temperature to avoid overheating.

Every accessory labeled with 4+ logo will be compatible with previous versions of Quick Charge. If you are planning to get a new charger or power bank, you don't need to worry that your QC 2.0 or 3.0 device will not be compatible. Qualcomm says that the first device with QC 4+ will be ZTE Nubia Z17. The Nubia Z17 sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 as its CPU.

TWRP Recovery Available on the LG G6 (H870)

Just yesterday we wrote that LG is finally offering a way to unlock the bootloader on the LG G6 (H870). The community didn't need much time to port a custom recovery.

Thanks to the efforts of the XDA Senior Member nima0003 and XDA Recognized Developer Rashed97, TWRP is available for the European variant of LG G6. The recovery allows users to flash the root package, kernels, mods and of course custom ROMs to replace the stock firmware. Please follow the instructions in the thread to get it working.

LG Has Finally Launched LG Pay, But Only in South Korea

Mobile payment services are everywhere with smartphone OEMs, banks and even retail stores wanting to get in on the action. This increase in popularity has happened over the last few years, but it was back in 2015 when we first started hearing about LG wanting to launch their own. This was likely in response to their regional rival launching Samsung Pay, but there has actually been a lot of talk about the mobile payment service over the years.

So many were waiting to see the service launched in 2015, but then an LG official statement chimed in and said the service was delayed until Q2 of last year. This was understandable at first as a mobile payment solution is a big undertaking and it can be a while until everything is put in place. But nothing happened in Q2 of last year and things were virtually silent about the service until October, when it was reported that LG wanted to use MST technology for LG Pay.

This is the technology Samsung is using as it allows the mobile payment service to be used at older credit card terminals. We then heard that LG Pay was scheduled to launch with the LG G6 this year but lo and behold the service didn't make an appearance when LG's latest flagship was brought to market. However, today it seems that the stars have aligned as the company was actually able to launch LG Pay in their home country of South Korea.

It will be added to the LG G6 in an upcoming software update and is said to work like a regular credit card so the phone can be used on magnetic readers. For now, the service supports credit cards from Shinhan, KB Kookmin, BC, and Lotte, but LG says all credit cards in South Korea will be supported by September of this year. LG Pay supports fingerprint recognition and has "one-time-password security."

Magisk Manager Removed from Play Store, Developer Comments on the Future of Magisk

Eagle-eyed community members spotted that one of the community's beloved projects, Magisk, was no longer available on the Google Play Store. The Play Store URL for Magisk Manager would 404, indicating that the project was taken off the primary and most popular source of Android app distribution. Even if you had the app downloaded previously, the listing would no longer show up on your 'Installed Apps' tab in the Play Store.

XDA Recognized Developer and Magisk's Main Developer topjohnwu took to our forums to shed light on the issue:

This is what I get from Google this morning:

Magisk Manager, com.topjohnwu.magisk, has been suspended and removed from Google Play as a policy strike because it violates the malicious behavior policy.

What is the so-called "malicious behavior"? From what I've suspect, viewing the definition of malicious behavior, most likely I violated the two following policies:

  • Apps that introduce or exploit security vulnerabilities.
  • Apps or SDKs that download executable code, such as dex files or native code, from a source other than Google Play.

For the first policy: Magisk bypasses Google's strict compatibility check – the CTS check on tampered devices (SafetyNet checks CTS status). CTS is what Google judge whether a manufacturer can ship a device with its Google services, so Google is definitely really serious about this issue. Also, Magisk roots your device, patches tons of SELinux policies (all rooting method do) etc, which is also an obvious security breach. However, I doubt this was the main reason, since many superuser management apps are also on the Play Store.

The main reason should be the other one.

The second rule I listed can be translated to: you cannot have anything "market-like" to let users download and run code on your device. Apparently, Magisk's Online Repo is a complete violation against this rule.

If it is for the second reason, Google's removal for Magisk should not come as a huge surprise. Google does not allow any other Play Store competitor, however limited in its functionality, onto the Play Store. This is one of the reasons why our very own XDA application on the Play Store is different and limited than the XDA Labs application available in our forums. XDA Labs has an app distribution system in place, which is not compatible with Google Play Store's policies and hence the XDA app on the Play Store does not feature the distribution system.

So, what happens with Magisk Manager now that it has been removed from the Play Store?

Topjohnwu mentions that Magisk as a project is not abandoned, and in fact, Magisk has had some significant progress lately. The developer has taken note of his options at this stage:

Now I have two choices: Remove the online repo from Magisk Manager, and re-release a NEW APP on the store (yes, once your app is pulled down, the package name and app name is permanently banned).

The other way is to simply just distribute the app through places like XDA and third-party markets (just like Xposed Installer).

I prefer the second decision, because I can still use the same package name, also I wouldn't need to remove the online repo feature, which is one of the most precious thing for a development community like XDA. What I really lost is the $25 dollars for Play Store registration lol.

Development is definitely NOT suspended in any way, in fact, I had significant progress lately.
There are still some bugs not sorted out, and I need some feedback from the users, so I decide to start a new thread for public beta testing! Expect the new thread to be live very soon, but I still need to do some small adjustments to deal with the unfortunate Play Store situation….

So the conclusion is: Yes, Magisk Manager is pulled from Play Store due to policy violation; and no, this is not a sign for the end of development. In fact, I think Magisk is undergoing the most active development since release!

Despite the Play Store setback, Magisk is still going on strong. The developer insists that the loss of Play Store as a distribution method does not signal the end of development for Magisk. In fact, the public beta for Magisk is coming soon, and the upcoming v13 release claims to be the largest release for Magisk since its release! A lot has changed for Magisk, and the developer will be looking for testers and users to provide feedback and logcats to fix issues. Expect more news on Magisk's development very soon.

The Play Store's popularity as a distribution platform on Android is undisputed and losing it does affect how easy it is to make your app available to a very large portion of Android users. However, Magisk is not as affected as one may prima facie believe. Magisk attracts only those users who want root and other customizations, and this by itself implies a savvier audience. Also, you can sideload the Magisk Manager apk, which should be no big deal for users who are looking forward to take advantage of Magisk's functionality.

What Google Taketh Away, XDA Giveth Back

All hope for easy updates is not lost though. Topjohnwu has uploaded Magisk Manager onto XDA Labs, making it easy for users who want to remain on the latest version at all times.

XDA Labs is an app platform that serves as an alternative to the Google Play Store, and it is best serving its purpose in times like these. You can have updates to Magisk Manager pushed through XDA Labs, so we recommend installing XDA Labs to get notified whenever a new update to Magisk is available. This is also not the first instance where an app has been removed from the Play Store but continues to be distributed through XDA Labs, like AdAway.

Galaxy S8: How the Developer Community Radically Improved My Experience (Without Root)

Sometimes it needs a little help to make it truly yours… again

Last week I wrote about why I felt the Galaxy S8's software was a major letdown in comparison to its software, but despite its faults it is still my go-to phone, for the moment. So how do I deal with software I admittedly hate, and performance that is subpar in contrast to other major flagships? Along the same lines of last year's thread (which ironically was nearly one year ago), here is how the developer community helped me radically improve my S8+ experience, this time with no root!

This article contains zero paid or otherwise reimbursed endorsements, these are just the apps I use day to day.


Debloating

So like I mentioned earlier, the S8's software needs work and a lot of it. The first thing I am going to tackle is bloat. Now this is a topic that draws a lot of arguments because as the old phrase goes, "One man's trash is another's treasure" and this applies to Samsung's software as well as anything. Do not follow this part of the guide verbatim, instead you can use it to help shape your decisions as to what you can safely debloat.

The first thing to look at is running services. Now, my preferred debloating application is BK Disabler. This is in no way an endorsement for them, use whichever you like the most. In BK you can sort by running processes and packages, which makes things helpful. Once you start sorting by these parameters be very careful as you can easily get yourself into trouble by disabling things like SystemUI (duh) or other important packages. It took me a solid 5 to 7 runthroughs to disable everything I did not want and I have linked a screenshot on Google Photos of my list. In this list you will see a lot of things that are "Samsung Features" that, like the old adage referenced above says, I feel are trash and I rarely, if ever, use them. Some of the major ones I disabled were those related to the entire edge panel — I never actually use it and it does cause some UI lag. I also disabled Bixby entirely, for obvious reasons. I disabled the Clipboard UI service as well. An issue is when I copy and paste passwords from my password manager, Keepass, they get stored in the clipboard and there is no method to blacklisting an app — major security issue for me so I killed it. Device Maintenance is an annoying one, this is preinstalled on some models (not Verizon) and is heavy, it tries to monitor app power, RAM usage, and storage and then recommends fixes. It uses a lot of system resources and just is not really needed. The issue though is that you lose the whole area in settings as well, so to access the stock Battery graph and Storage manager I just used Nova actions and set it to a folder on my desktop… over 100mb of constant RAM usage saved.

Some other things I disabled are the entire Game Service suite, GearVR services, and the Themes service. These are easy enough to enable when necessary, and parts of them are always running, for absolutely zero reason. Next up is Knox. Now know this, if you disable Knox, Samsung Pay ceases to function along with the Secure Folder and anything else that could be managed by it and likely breaks Exchange support, especially with MDM's, so do approach with caution. That being said I noticed the largest change in performance by disabling the Knox suite of services.

So with all that disabled, what actually still works? Well, everything that needs to work. Calls work with the stock dialer, SMS, MMS, Wifi Calling, VoLTE, Camera, the ability to stretch apps to 18.5:9 and Multi-Window, the screenshot enhancements like scroll capture and cropping, the fingerprint sensor (although I disabled Iris and face unlock), and a lot more. Basically, you are looking at what you get with a stock'ish build of Android with minimal additions and the essentials for the phone to still work. I also do not get any force closures due to my disabled applications. The only side effects are when opening settings, as so many major things are disabled, that it causes the menu to hesitate when loading the main settings and the security menu. Other than that, and since those are rarely used anyways, my setup has been 100% stable for me but your mileage will absolutely vary. Take time, it may take a few days to really iron out your build to perfection, but it is absolutely worth it.

A note about using a Bixby Remapper – If you want to use one of these applications you can disable all Bixby related packages except "Hello Bixby" and "Bixby". I don't know about other disablers allow this, but BK disabler allows you to disable services. You can tap into the Bixby app, tap services, and disable all except the last one "Wink Service". Then go into "Hello Bixby" and disable all services but SpageService. As to if disabling individual services really impacts performance, who knows, but in an effort to disable all but what is needed, those are the steps to do so and still retain the remapping features.


Getting the Look You Want

The second thing is the interface. While I give Samsung a lot of crap for their software, the themes engine and UI is surprisingly excellent. I do wish the theme manager gave me more granular controls, but you can't have everything. Go and find a good theme you enjoy and set it up — I recommend doing this prior to debloating since the Themes engine is something I remove, and it needs to be setup prior to installing a new theme. Also the Samsung Account manager needs to be enabled to download a theme, but not to install one. So download any theme you want, and then you can switch between them by only enabling the Theme app after debloating. Like most of us, I also use Nova Launcher and an icon pack. My icon pack today is Urmun and I traditionally use Backdrops for my wallpapers and Gracerial for the system theme, although that one is a paid theme.

The second part of the system theme I wanted to change is the navigation icons, they are just straight up ugly, and needed to change. Well thankfully the developer community found a way to install overlays that work perfectly to change the icons, check this thread for the instructions and icons list. I also made my navbar smaller at 30points and my dpi is set to 470, the smallest I have found that does not kick certain apps into weird scaling. Finally, I use the SystemUI Tuner app I talk about below to disable a lot of system tray icons I do not care to see. After all my changes, I am left with a super clean and very personalized phone that is very me, and very little Samsung, just the way I like it.


Fixing Notifications

Finally, we have what's probably my largest gripe and is likely something that is bothering you without even realizing it: notifications. Have you noticed that most apps are not notifying you like they should on the S7 and S8 on Nougat? Well, Samsung pretty much saw what Google has offered with Nougat and decided to just destroy it all by totally breaking notification control for their own crap. Many of us likely use the SystemUI Tuner option on stock builds of Android to enable fine grain controls of notifications that allow you the user to set exactly how an app notifies you with Heads-up control, DND bypassing, and more. That same tuner and subsequent options have been totally removed on the Samsung's Nougat, and up until today I could not find a way to enable it. Enter System UI Tuner by Zacharee1 an excellent application still in development that enables most of what Samsung, and others, disable. With this application you can toggle the Status Bar icons and use the demo mode, both are features Samsung ditched. More importantly for this right now though, is the ability to get the fine tuning Notification Control back, though it takes some work. This is the method I have found to set any apps' importance (aside from those Samsung locks out) to whatever I need, there may be other methods but this works 100% of the time with no irregularity.

  1. Go into settings and disable notifications for whatever applications you want to tune. Prior to disabling the notifications set the options you want for lock screen notifications and priority. I do not know if this carries through, but it doesn't hurt and once you turn on the enhance settings these are not togglable. For me these apps were Inbox, IFTTT, Facebook Messenger, and Google Hangouts all for not having Heads-Up notifications.
  2. Go into the SystemUI Tuner and set it up with ADB permissions (this requires a PC with ADB running)
  3. Go to the Miscellaneous menu and turn on the slider for Heads-up Notifications and then scroll down to Power Notification Controls and enable this.
  4. Go back to the settings for the application you are fixing and hit the back button to go back a menu, and then re-enter the notification controls — you will see the new slider. You can only tap this once, although people say spamming it works but it did not for me, so make sure you know what you want to set it to. If you mishit, or want to change it just do Step 3 and 4 again.

Now your notifications can be granularly controlled just like it is on Stock Android, and the way it should be.


The Galaxy S8 is not a bad phone, in fact it is very likely one of the best phones on the market in terms of the total experience — it just needs some fine tuning and attention that Samsung's reluctant to give it. 

This article is not an all encompassing rule book to be followed to the letter, but more of a guide to help you to make the S8 truly yours, and to hopefully help it perform better.
