Chainfire Recommends Staying in SuperSU 2.79 for Xperia Users

It's really hard to imagine XDA without SuperSU. The most popular and essential root application has been providing root access and management on Android devices for years. Unfortunately, the latest versions weren't working entirely properly, so XDA Senior Recognized Developer Chainfire made a statement to shed some light on the problem.

Over the last couple of days, some of SuperSU's users have reported that version 2.80 and 2.81 caused issues on their devices. To be more specific, the latest versions of the app caused bootloops on Xperia phones and tablets. Additionally, devices that run KitKat may have lost root access after installing version 2.80. This was a huge deal, as such issues were very rare in the past. Finally, some of the forum members reported that AdAway wasn't able to update the hosts file.

Chainfire and Coding Code Mobile Technology LLC (CCMT), which acquired the project in late 2015, acted swiftly and started to work on the fix. To resolve these problems, developers released two bug fix versions. The first was unsuccessful but the second managed to fix some flaws. Now, SuperSU v2.82 is rolling out on Google Play Store. The latest release brings back stability on non-Xperia devices, but users of Sony devices are advised to stick to version 2.79.

Starting at version 2.80, SuperSU requires new permissions. Their introduction has alarmed some users, though these are used for the bug feedback screen. Chainfire admitted that those permissions do seem a bit excessive, and the permission model will be reviewed after fixing the Xperia issue.

SuperSU has two versions: one is compiled for devices without Play Store in China, while the second is the well-known app from the Play Store. The Chinese version uses analytics and does not transfer any personal information, while international version does not use analytics at all. The new permissions used in the build were required by the feedback screen that is available on the bottom of the settings. Once again, Chainfire assured users that no personal information and analytics are transferred by the international version.

Evan Blass Publishes Renders of Project Joan (LG V30), Features Slider Secondary Display

While we can't wait for the OnePlus 5, the other companies work hard to surprise its users. Newest renders show what's perhaps one of the most interesting-looking phones coming this year, courtesy of LG no less. @evleaks presented the LG V30 — the third smartphone of the V line, which is expected to be released in a few months.

The V series always brings something unique, with the two first devices of the series featuring a ticker display. The next generation of the LG uber-flagship will feature a slider secondary display. A picture is worth a thousand words, so please, take a look:

The LG V30 is internally called Project Joan. Its secondary screen has a slider mechanism similar to the one used in BlackBerry Priv, revealing a display instead of a keyboard. The screen will be fully interactive, and Evan Blass provided some usage scenarios as well.

We don't know much about the project, and Mr. Blass notes the phone's direction might have changed since these renders were created. The phone should be released in a few months, though, and we should (at the very least) expect something unique, again, for LG's V line. If these renders are true and the concept hasn't been scrapped, the LG V30 could be quite interesting.

BlackBerry Will Receive $940 Million from Qualcomm in Arbitration

Back in April, we informed that Qualcomm would have to pay almost $815 million to BlackBerry over a royalties dispute. New numbers arrived, and the chipmaker must pay $940 million to BlackBerry for its patent practices. The final settlement agreement obliges Qualcomm to pay the full amount before May 31.

Qualcomm is the biggest chipmaker for mobile devices. Its processors are used in most flagship devices available on the market today, and their mid-range chipsets have gained solid ground and popularity. Qualcomm and BlackBerry came together to discuss how much money the latter company paid to use the patents held by Qualcomm. BlackBerry felt that the amount was unreasonably high and requested an arbitration. The process revealed that Qualcomm might have made BlackBerry overpay for its products.

Arbitration decided and dictated the compensation award will be a total amount of $940 million, including interests and attorney fees. This decision is a huge deal to BlackBerry, as the last quarter of the year brought in $286 million of revenue to this once-famous OEM, and in 2017 it is poised to bring better devices through its partner manufacturer.

It's not the first time that we see Qualcomm in a quarrel, as the company has been tackled by Apple and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, with both cases still in development.

While Android Leaps Forward, Samsung’s Software Still has Trouble Catching Up to its Hardware

I don't tend to keep it a secret that I am a fan of Samsung phones. I wrote about how I felt the Note7 was a "Remarkable Phone for Life", meaning that it was suited for everything life throws at it, and I could probably rewrite that article substituting every Note7 reference for the Galaxy S8. Ever since Samsung's renaissance with the Galaxy S6, I have been hooked.

Ultra premium designs have become more orchestrated and perfected with every generation sandwiching glass, aluminum, and more glass into a what I feel are the best built phones on the market, period. Samsung's AMOLED displays had a really rough start but the last few years have been dominated by Samsung's brainchild and are now delivering the most versatile, accurate, and pleasing displays that money can buy. It doesn't stop there either: the camera is a constant top-tier contender even if it trades its accuracy for amazing focus abilities, and Samsung has led the way in mainstream water resistance. While the whole industry has moved forward from the fantastic plastic flagship era, it is hard to deny that Samsung feels and looks like it is moving at a totally different pace and momentum. All of that comes to a crashing halt though, the moment you actually have to use a Samsung phone, and in this aspect I feel that Samsung is quickly losing ground.


Back in the day there was a real need for UI and UX improvements on Android. HTC's Sense software, in my opinion, helped move Android from what felt like a nerd's playground – that looked the part – into a professional and aesthetically-pleasing OS. Samsung's TouchWiz software no doubt was the starting point for what is finally becoming a fully-fledged multi-window-supporting AOSP, and Motorola innovated in hands-free intelligence, always listening microphones, and screen-off notification displays. Google has taken these features along with their basic implementation and added them to what we typically refer to as Stock Android, and in doing so has managed to keep it streamlined, responsive, and most importantly it feels bloat-free. Samsung though, must have missed that particular memo and in doing so still delivers a bloated experience that suffers due to their insistence of adding more and more "features", and I use that term loosely, to their phones. This isn't to say that Google does everything properly, or that every OEM should implement stock Android with merely a boot animation distinguishing them, instead, heavy-handed experiences like Samsung's need to be cut back, optimized, streamlined and offer the user more choice.

While everyone's baseline for what is acceptable is different, it is hard to deny that bloated options like the Samsung Experience have a detrimental effect on device performance. I am jealous every time I watch a video showing off the HTC U11 or Google Pixel; they are just so instantaneously responsive, something my S8+ cannot match even on its best days.


It's not just the amount of added applications and services, it is also the optimization of them that matters. On your Galaxy S8 right now, there are dozens of services running that simply do not need to be there for most users, that are taking up valuable system resources, and even if the impact of them is low it is still something running that simply does not perceptibly or substantially add to our experience. These running services take up your available RAM, but more importantly are using valuable CPU time and attention. Have you ever used the the Samsung DeX system? Well, its software is running on your S8. Ever used Samsung's woefully broken and useless "Connect" or "Bixby" services? Well, those services are running right now on your S8. Even if you have never applied a theme to your phone, there are at least 2 themes services that are running that have no need to be, because if disabled, your phone works exactly as it did prior to disabling them; I know, I have them disabled. If you have ever used GearVR, the Oculus suite is installed and stays running at all times, even if you haven't used your headset in days or weeks or since a reboot. Normally most users won't even notice one or two of these services running in the background, but when those services add up to dozens of unneeded running tasks, it quickly becomes a problem. 

… Just no Samsung

Samsung's insistence on adding a growing amount of limited use and poorly-optimized software adds little more than a bullet point during an announcement and some usefulness to a small subset of users. Inversely, its negative impact affects all users of the device even if they never use the services or even know it exists. There is a reason why one of the most common comments in Galaxy S8 reviews was the skepticism over if the device will remain responsive, because the Galaxy S6 and S7 have not aged as gracefully as their less-bloated brothers from other manufacturers, and it's not because the S7's Snapdragon 820 magically got slower over time. Personally, I have used a package disabler to remove over 180 services and packages I simply do not need on my phone, and that is with keeping the stock camera, dialer, and calendar. The funny thing is that with all of these services and applications disabled, my phone feels more responsive, less unpredictable, and offered better battery life than before. Perhaps not substantially, but demonstrably — and I'll back that up in an upcoming article as well. 

Without the missing "Device Maintenance" tab in settings you would be hard-pressed to even know so much is disabled. I also do not get endless runs of force closures and broken features, because the phone was built to run this way, without all of the crap and bloat Samsung markets. I don't need eyeball aware screen timeout (it's still there by the way), or to have the phone tell me that it can clean 700mb of perceived useless files. I don't intend on turning my phone into a PC or unlocking it with my eyes, and I certainly never plan on using the Bixby button for more than an accidental power key when my phone is upside down. What is ironic is that the Bixby key is the physical representation of all of Samsung's software; useful for a few but is just a useless add-on for others taking up valuable space or resources that could have been spent elsewhere or used for a different purpose. Samsung's software ,aesthetically, is the best it has looked in years and deserves the praise it has received lately; but it is just as bloated and janky as ever, which is the complete opposite of its hardware which is simply unrivaled.


But these are also some of the same things that set Samsung apart from the competition; as I mentioned earlier their multi-window was and is still years ahead of Android's stock implementation and they are the only company right now reliably using alternative biometric unlock methods. But we need a change that can be narrowed down to two things: the first is an opt-in or even a fully disabled opt-out methodology. If I do not want edge features, Iris unlock, and the like; I as the user should have the ability to remove them without resorting to third party solutions that sometimes do not even work, and might have uninformed users misconfigure their phone yielding adverse effects. Secondly, those services I do opt-into need to be optimized so they are not needlessly running. I don't mind waiting an extra 2 seconds for Oculus to open up if it means its service is not running in the background for the week that I never used the service.

The main issue isn't necessarily the gambles they are taking with new and innovative features, but that they are taking them in a way that is poorly optimized which significantly hinders the experience. General performance and efficiently handling services aren't sexy things you can slap on a keynote, but they are much more important to our day-to-day experiences, and Samsung needs to take this into consideration when prioritizing their efforts. Android no longer needs an OEM's customization's to make it run better, more aesthetically pleasing, or more feature rich by default. While themes and extra features are niceties to have they shouldn't be forced on users who simply want an uncluttered experience.

I love my Galaxy S8+ and often times I will hold it just to admire the craftsmanship, because it is a beautiful piece of hardware. However, the moment I ignite that display I am reminded of just how much I give up for that experience and at some point it just isn't going to be worth it anymore.

OnePlus Starts A Referral Program, Offers Cheaper Accessories

Just yesterday we informed you about OnePlus selling the remaining stock of the OnePlus 3T, effectively discontinuing the device. The recent moves by OnePlus may suggest that the anticipated premiere of the OnePlus 5 is coming very soon. To complement that, the company is starting a referral program for its users, bringing some goodies to the current and future OnePlus device owners.

These kinds of systems aren't totally new to OnePlus. The Chinese OEM used a dreaded invite system to sell the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. Those attempts didn't go well, as users didn't have a chance to get these phones on time. Still, that was a valuable experience for the company (if only because their first device was just too desirable), as OnePlus managed to prove its position in the smartphone market. Now, we expect a fourth flagship from OnePlus coming this summer, possibly within a month.

The newly introduced referral system is different from the invite system, luckily. Anyone who has ever bought a OnePlus device via the official website can get a unique referral code. If it's used to get a OnePlus 5 (or any other smartphone made by OnePlus), the buyer will get a $20 (or equivalent in the local currency) discount for accessories. The person who shared the code will receive 100 referral points no more than 30 days later. Collected points can be spent on standard shipping, accessories or the Never Settle T-Shirt. OnePlus promised to expand the referral hub with new stuff, including price discounts on phones. The referral program is located here.

The introduction of the referral program is an interesting move. New users could get some nice accessories the for the lower price. Finally, current OnePlus customers will get something for free. All we need to do is wait for the OnePlus 5 launch.

Internal Video from Microsoft Showcases Their Original Vision for the Lumia 950

The Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL were not the most popular of smartphones. The phones opened up against heavy competition from Android OEM who enjoyed the figurative edge in the mobile ecosystem. The Android OEMs prevailed and Microsoft retrenched its efforts in the mobile space.

A new video from Windows Central showcases Microsoft's original vision for the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The original vision promises a Windows experience that might have helped the devices get the extra edge in their fight against Android.

According to the 'original' vision, the Lumia 950 series was going to be Microsoft's star Windows phone that would showcase the best the platform had to offer. The video shows off the several ideas that Microsoft had planned for Lumia 950 and Windows 10 Mobile. These include a different Glance screen, pen support, device edge gestures and even smart covers.

Windows Central cites internal and external sources that wish to remain anonymous and goes on to mention that the video was created before the Lumia 950 and Windows 10 Mobile were finished. As a result, the video is showing off what can be considered concept ideas but which were expected to be ready in time for the launch in 2015. Some of these features like the pen support made it to testing, but were then cancelled before the launch. It's also interesting that there was a lot of emphasis on both Continuum and cross-compatibility with the Surface line.

We are unlikely to see any of these features or accessories release for the Lumia 950 series now. But that by itself does not rule out the possibility of these features coming to a future Surface phone, if it exists. The video remains an ode to what Windows Mobile could have been.

What Do You Want from the OnePlus 5?

The OnePlus 3T is ending its production run, so we now move on to the next flagship from OnePlus. The next flagship device will obviously have flagship specifications, like the Snapdragon 835 that OnePlus confirmed themselves.

The competition this year goes beyond specifications though. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ pushed the envelope for smartphone design, while devices like the HTC U 11 added in features like a squeezable frame.

So we ask you,

What do you want from the OnePlus 5? What are your expectations from the device? Which aspects from the OnePlus 3T should OnePlus change, and which ones should they retain? Does OnePlus need a revolutionary change to stand apart from the competition?
