At its 2017 Galaxy Unpacked event in New York, Samsung has lifted the veil from its newest flagship. The new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is the latest smartphone in a lineup that famously created its own "phablet" niche. As expected, the Note8 comes with the top-of-the-line specs from Samsung coupled with the unique S-Pen functionality, and is also the first flagship device from Samsung to come with a dual rear camera setup.
Design-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is very similar to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The main design elements are borrowed from early flagships, while the device still tries to stick to the square, boxy roots of the Note lineup. What we get is a device with a 6.3″ Super-AMOLED display in Samsung's new Infinity Display design, but with more squared-off corners. The screen resolution is 1440 x 2960 in a 18.5:9 aspect ratio, similar to what we see in the earlier S-series devices. Barring the rear camera setup, everything else follows along the S-series lineup, including the 3.5mm headphone jack thankfully.
On the inside, the Galaxy Note 8 will be powered by Samsung's 10nm FinFET based Exynos 8895 SoC for its global variants, while the device will get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the US and Chinese market. The Note 8 does get a slight theoretical performance edge over the S8/S8+ as it comes with 6GB of RAM as standard, coupled with 64GB/128GB/256GB of internal storage, along with a microSD expansion slot. Samsung is choosing to remain conservative on the battery, as the Note 8 comes with a 3,300 mAh battery compared to the 3,500 mAh battery on the ill-fated Note 7. There's fast charging available through the USB Type-C port, or wirelessly. The phone is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 launches with Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box underneath Samsung's Touchwiz UX, but the phone will receive Android 8.0 Oreo in the future. And yes, there's still a dedicated Bixby button on the phone.
The most striking upgrade on the Note 8 comes in the camera setup, as this is the first flagship device from Samsung to sport a dual-rear camera setup. Both the rear cameras feature a 12MP sensor and OIS — the primary, wide angle lens camera has a f/1.7 aperture and dual-pixel autofocus, while the secondary camera has a telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and the ability to provide 2x optical zoom. The front camera is an 8MP shooter with autofocus and f/1.7 aperture.
Of course, no Note device will be complete without the S-Pen. The S-Pen on the Note 8 is water-resistant and capable of detecting 4096 levels of pressure, so you get the most accurate pen experience that you can on a smartphone. The S-Pen has not really improved from the Note 7, but the S-Pen on the Note 7 was very good, so there isn't much to complain here.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes in Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Grey and Deep Sea Blue color variants; and knowing Samsung, there will likely be a few more color variants in the future. Pre-orders for the device open from 24th August while the device goes on sale on 15th September, and Samsung is throwing in a few deals to make you jump the gun early. You can either opt for a 256GB microSD card and a wireless charger, or go for the 360-degree camera; though the pre-order gift may vary depending on regional availability.
